Tutulong si Senador Francis “Chiz” Escudero sa karagdagang pondo ng Philippine Sports Commission, ito ay kung babalangkas ang ahensiya ng makabuluhang programa na nakapokus makakopo ng medalyang ginto ang bansa sa 30th Summer Olympic Games sa 2012 sa London.
Binanggit ni Escudero kahapon na karapat-dapat ang PSC sa pera ng gobyerno, pero kailangang dapat magasta ang bawat sentimo nito sa tamang paraan upang ‘di na muling mabokya sa medalya ang ‘Pinas sa Olimpiada.
Bokya ang RP sa huling tatlong tuwing apat na taong palaro – 2000 sa Sydney, 2004 sa Athens at sa Beijing sa taong ito. Huling nakasakote pa ang mga Pinoy ng medalya – pilak – na kaloob ni amateur boxer Mansueto Velasco, Jr. noong 1996 sa Atlanta.
“We want to hear an assurance whatever funding the PSC would receive would be spent on sports which are focused on winning an Olympic medal, a gold if possible,” banggit ni Escudero.
Darayo ang mga opisyal ng Kumisyunado, sa paggiya ng tagapangulong si William Ramirez sa linggong ito sa Senado para depensahan ang hinihiling na pinansiyal sa 2009 General Appropriations Fund. Subalit dumanas agad ng dagok ang PSC na nangangasiwa sa programang pampalakasan ng pamahalaan nang ang kinukuhang P750-milyong pondo ay tastasin ng Kongreso sa karampot lamang na P216M, halos kagaya ng tinatanggap nito taun-taon noong dekada 90.
“We are aware of the needs of our athletes, and we have not forgotten our ugly experience in the recent Beijing Olympics. I will support efforts to increase the PSC budget as long as the agency is able to convince us where the people’s money would be used and for what purpose,” pangako ni Escudero.
“If PSC officials could guarantee the nation that with an increased budget, given that government could afford to give it, and it would be sufficient to win us an Olympic gold medal, then I am raising my hand for a budget increase,” dagdag ng mambabatas
Ngunit klinaro ni Escudero na kailangang pagbutihin pa rin ng PSC ang trabaho nito sa maliit na budget, lalo na’t ang 25th Southeast Asian Games sa Laos sa susunod na taon lang ang malaking okasyon nitong pagtutuunan.
.“Then, we could work together to increase the budget every year without sacrificing the athletes’ training, specially those with Olympic potential,” patuloy niya.. “We should keep our focus on the Olympics, and start our rise from the sporting abyss today.”
